BACK ROSCOMMON TO BEAT MEATH IN THE NFL DIVISION 2 FINAL TODAY 7-4 Odds quoted are from Paddy Power Two years ago, John Maughan (right) had a smirk on his face so pronounced you could hear it over the radio. He was co-commentating on the NFL Division Two final between Meath and Monaghan when a late goal secured a dramatic victory for the Ulster side. "It's terrible to see something like that happening to Meath, " he beamed. The Roscommon manager has never won a national title, as any Mayo person will be unhappy to tell you, his home county famously being denied an All Ireland by Meath in 1996. . .twice. But while Meath have marquee names like Darren Fay and Graham Geraghty they hardly justify 4-7 favouritism.
An abject performance saw them well beaten by Wexford in their last divisional outing while only Sligo and Waterford were beaten comfortably in a poor division. Two early goals knocked the stuffing out of a wasteful Monaghan in last week's semi-final. Meanwhile, Roscommon were impressive against Cavan and seem to be hitting form. Seamus O'Neill is a big loss at midfield, but they have the option of Karol Mannion coming deep and creating a platform for the likes of the in-form Ger Heneghan. If the manager can pass on even a fraction of his motivation, it's a done deal.
BACK FULHAM TO BEAT ARSENAL 19-2 Odds quoted are from Betfair What better place for a season-breaking result for Fulham than the Emirates Stadium? Against a notoriously flaky side, with strikers that can't score and chaos going on in the boardroom?
For a manager who has established a giantkilling reputation, this must seem like easy pickings. West Ham ignited their push for safety with a 1-0 win here at the start of the month. Since then, Arsene Wenger's midfielders have remembered how to score but that tendency to fold quicker than Superman on laundry day remains, with a seemingly inevitable victory against Spurs being tossed away last week. Plus they haven't kept a clean sheet at the Emirates since Charlton visited with the Christmas decorations still up. It's impossible to know what effect Sanchez's management style will have on a cosmopolitan team that may not be particularly receptive to a reportedly unorthodox individual. But today is the perfect venue to light the blue touchpaper against a side they've already beaten this season.
Where the money was. . .
BACK MANCHESTER UNITED TO BEAT MILAN AT OLD TRAFFORD ON TUESDAY 9-1 (Betfair) Isit just me, or has there been a crazy amount of late goals this season?
Not just late goals, but proper, injury-time, last-gasp, at-the-death strikes. If it weren't for the crushing inevitability that it won't happen again this season, it'd be tempting to empty the account on Spurs or United to score whenever the fourth official holds his board up. If you had done so last Tuesday night, you might well have got close to 9-1 before Wayne Rooney did the biz.
