OVER 5bn has been invested in the Dublin docklands by the public and private sector in the past 10 years with a further 5bn to be spent on infrastructure and social regeneration projects in the area by 2012.
Plans for the Poolbeg peninsula include the construction of a sustainable mixed-use development, which will preserve the natural heritage of the area, according to Lar Bradshaw, chairman of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA).
Speaking at the launch of the DDDA's annual report, Bradshaw promised "exciting times ahead" for the docklands, with major infrastructural projects such as the Grand Canal Theatre and the U2 Tower due for construction.
In the chief executive's review, Paul Maloney said that the dynamic of the docklands is constantly changing, with the arrival of new residents and the establishment of many new corporate headquarters in the area.
"The challenge for the years ahead is to build on the solid successes to date and continue to meet the ambitious targets set across physical, social and cultural dimensions to deliver the docklands project, " he said.
"During the year, 555 residential units were completed, including 116 social units which were completed, allocated and occupied in the Grand Canal Dock area.
"In addition, nearly 36,000sq m of office development was completed in the docklands during the year, " he said.
