AMERICAN companies are pushing the steel this year, with new Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler models coming on stream in the next few months.
Just arrived this week are two new models for Jeep:
the Compass, a compact SUV, and the much bigger Wrangler. The Compass goes on sale at 33,995 and is powered by a 2-litre 138 bhp turbo-diesel VWsourced engine which puts out 310 Nm of torque. The 4X4 system used in the Compass kicks in in slippery conditions when the rear-wheel drive activates to complement the front-wheel drive.
There is also a 50/50 frontrear lock up option.
The engine is one of the most economical diesel units on the market and provides plenty of power for the Compass, which by Jeep standards is light and compact. The Compass is based on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber but is higher and slightly bigger. The body lines are conservative with no bulging wheel arches or huge bumpers. The traditional Jeep trademark . . . the seven-slit grille with round headlights . . . is carried up front. This four-/fiveseater is high-sided and high on the road. It sits on 18in alloy wheels and rides well.
The diesel noise seeps into the cabin but is not unduly intrusive. The specification includes air conditioning, heated leather seats, cruise control, big American airbags, heated mirrors, all electric windows, anti-roll technology and even a compass in the dash.
Automatic transmission will be available within 12 months and Jeep claim 6.4L/100km is possible.
The Wrangler will sell as a two-door Sport version at 38,795 and as a fourdoor model at 42,495. The power plants here are a 2.4-litre petrol and a 2.8litre Chrysler turbo-diesel unit putting out 177 bhp with 410 Nm of torque.
This bigger vehicle on 16in wheels has a selective 4X4 drive and more basic equipment than the Compass. The Land Rover Defender is seen as a rival.
In October, another Jeep, the Patriot, a Compasssized vehicle with different style and specification, will be on the forecourts. The Dodge range is also to be extended.
And Chrysler, which is already represented by the 300C, launches a similar size segment D saloon in June: the Sebring, which will also have a choice of 2litre petrol or diesel engines.
Later in the year a cabrio version with the choice of cloth or metal roof will follow. This full four-seater has enough room for two sets of golf clubs in the boot even with the roof down.
