ANGRY residents living near the site of the planned 'super prison' in north Dublin will this week have a crunch headto-head meeting with election candidates from the three constituencies that straddle the area. A public meeting has been organised by the Rolestown St Margaret's Action Group as an opportunity for each of the election candidates in Dublin North, Dublin West and Meath East to outline their position on the proposed development at Thornton Hall.
The meeting comes after the Sunday Tribune last week revealed that the government has done a major u-turn on its controversial plans for the prison by purchasing more land to allow traffic to access the jail. Justice minister Michael McDowell has acquired the new land bank to develop road access to the 29.9m jail site, which will replace Mountjoy Prison.
Among contentious issues which are set to be raised at next Thursday night's meeting are the new road, McDowell's controversial Prisons Bill 2006 and the environmental impact of the prison. The meeting will take place at the Coolquay Lodge, near the prison site.
