Speakers' corner: choosing a sound system

1 Harman Kardon Sound Sticks Looking like the mutation of a jelly"sh and a cake dish, the Harman Kardon SoundSticks deliver an impressive sound quality for their size. A lot of effort went into making them look unique and they'd go very well with any computers but especially anything from Apple.

Price: 158 from Komplett. ie Review: http: //url. ie/3ua "If you can overlook a few missing details, you should "nd the Harman Kardon SoundSticks II speakers attractive, versatile, and accurate.

Prepare to pay a bit more than you normally would for a 2.1 set, but the audio quality is de"nitely worth the price."

2 JBL Spyro Speakers Taking the lead from Harman Kardon, another set of speakers designed to look different. Compared to other speakers in the category, the JBLs might be let down on their sound quality but this might only be noticed by serious audiophiles. Good value for money though, for what they do.

Price: 93 online Review: http: //url. ie/3uf "One really nice thing about both of these systems is how JBL has done the cabling. The cables for the satellites are wrapped in a really nice-looking rope.

This reduces tangle and makes even the cables look nice. One gripe many people have about three-piece speaker systems is how it adds a lot of clutter with all the cords draped everywhere. The nice touch of using wrapped cables acknowledges this annoyance and makes it much more pleasant."

3 Creative GigaWorks T20 Speakers A leader in PC speakers for decades, the CReative GigaWorks T20 build on their experience to deliver superior audio quality for a low price. Creative is also at last starting to put more time into designing sleeker products and this pays off with the T20.

Price: 99 from Elara. ie Review: http: //url. ie/3ud "The attractive presentation, whether muted by the grills or "aunting the yellow woven-glass mids in the open, lends a high-tech air to the presence of the T20s. Coupled with a logical and convenient layout of controls and inputs/outputs, the sonic quality and presentation value of the GigaWorks T20s makes them a top "ight product."

4 Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 system The best of the bunch, these Logitech speakers are touch-sensitive, have easy-touse controls, and contain a backlit display that contains song information and displays a clock when not in use. The sound quality is quite impressive and gives off rich sounds despite lack of a subwoofer.

Price: 149 from Peats. com Review: http: //url. ie/3ub "When it comes to speakers, looks and features are great, but one thing is paramount: sound quality. While Logitech clearly spent a lot of time designing the Z-10 interactive speaker system to be stylish and feature-rich, they didn't forget about sound quality. With some exceptions, these speakers really sound great." Damien Mulley
