Q I have an interview coming up shortly that I am very interested in making a big impression at. I am confident with the preparation work I have done but do you have any advice on interview etiquette?
A In addition to the preparation you put in for the interview, there are some key points to remember on the day.
First, be on time. Being late is one of the worst first impressions you can make.
There is no excuse for being late for an interview. Know exactly where you are going and do a test run ahead of the interview if you feel it is necessary. Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This will give you plenty of time to settle yourself and gather your thoughts. And don't forget to turn off your mobile phone.
This may seem like an obvious point, but it is one that is easily overlooked.
Secondly, dressing well creates a very good impression. It also shows respect for your interviewers and will help you 'feel the part'.
This will do wonders for your confidence. Keep your dress conservative . . . choose a navy or black suit, or some other conservative colour such as beige or brown. Keep jewellery and accessories to a minimum. Make-up should also be kept to a minimum as should any perfume or cologne.
Finally, shake hands firmly and confidently with the panel. Smile and listen to all introductions at the start.
Remember their names; you will be addressing each of these individuals during the course of the interview.
