THE price of EU carbon dioxide permits rose by over 3% last week after German power prices hit a six-month high.
Emission permits for December 2008 jumped by as much as 60 cents, or 3.1%, to 19.95 a tonne. They were at 19.90 a tonne on Friday, short of their 10-month high of 20.30 a tonne. German base load power for next year rose 50 cents to 56.05/MWh.
Permit prices gained as the European Commission scaled back allocations for the next five years. Higher German power prices boost the attractiveness of generation, potentially increasing demand for permits.
