THIS week will be the fifth anniversary of the one of the most divisive events in Irish history. On 28 May 2002, RTE's Tommie Gorman pleaded with Roy Keane to return to Saipan . . . at least for the sake of "depressed" Irish children.
Five years on, the Green Party has taken a leaf from Gorman's book and put Irish children to the fore.
One of the highlights of watching Election 2007 unfold on the internet last week was the Greens' 'Political Broadcast' featuring a number of children talking about their vision for the future.
Echoing Trevor Sargent's "think of the children" plea during the leaders' debate on TV on Wednesday, the broadcast, which was available on You Tube all week and broadcast before the Ahern-Kenny TV debate on Thursday night, is a well-directed video allowing the kids to do the serious political talking.
The Greens have also provided top-quality online entertainment with a video of Ciaran Cuffe looking for a cycle lane on O'Connell Street . . . also available on You Tube. It sounds boring until you realise that Cuffe must have the camera strapped to his head as he gives out about the difficulty of cycling down "Ireland's capital street".
Elsewhere, through some inventive photo-shopping, Nat King Coleslaw has an amusing take on what the hit US TV series 24would be like with a Labour party cast on www. currychips. com.
On a more serious note, Ireland's Mr Broadband, Damien Mulley of Irelandoffline, interestingly dissects the various broadband promises parties have made ahead of the election on www. mulley. net Meanwhile, the Rock The Vote campaign has angered one young anarchist who has launched a 'Fock the Vote' campaign on You Tube.
You could be forgiven for thinking that all those who say 'Fock' are in some way related to 'Political Thicko', who put his 'Three Minute Guide' to the election on www. blogorrah. com this weekend.
In an off-the-wall look at the election, Political Thicko has made a video of himself talking politics, coming up with such profound political thoughts as:
"That Mary Lou McDonald.
She's hot. But is she surgically attached to Gerry Adams or is it just Velcro?" He also contends that Fine Gael's main political platform is Enda's hair and compares Lucinda Creighton to an Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Thicko's take on the Greens' children plea is inspired:
"Expect nine-month school holidays, free Coca-Cola in every shop and the Tweenies and Sheryl Tweedy in cabinet."
