GOWRAN AND NAVAN PREVIEW
THE Philip Fenton-trained Sher Beau goes in search of a confidence-boosting win over the smaller obstacles in the Laurence McLoughlin Builders Handicap Hurdle at Navan today. Davy Russell's mount looked all set for victory in a conditions chase at Killarney last Sunday, only to fall at the final obstacle and hand the race to Jim.
The eight-year-old has been very unlucky, for one reason or another, this year but looked back to his best at Killarney where he was sent off favourite. He should be capable of landing this prize as he is well-treated over hurdles, compared with his chase rating.
Dix Villez is another horse who is better known for his exploits over fences. Both the trip and the ground should suit and he will not be far away, but slight preference is for Lottomore Lad who filled the runner-up spot, beaten by half a length, in a handicap chase won by On The Other Hand at Killarney on Monday evening.
Ruby Walsh, who rides Dix Villez, should have better luck at the meeting through the Willie Mullins-trained Polar Call and Dealers Trick, from the Pat Fahy stable, in the two divisions of the Rendezvous Maiden Hurdle.
Walsh has a good chance of making it a treble courtesy of the versatile Arc En Ciel in the Ladbrokes. com Hurdle.
Breaking Silence, who finished a creditable third in the Grade 1 Landrover Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown, and Carlessimo, who made an eye-catching return to action at the Punchestown Festival, rank as the biggest dangers to Arc En Ciel.
Meanwhile, at Gowran Park, the Dermot Weldtrained Subtle Shimmer gets the vote to open her account in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden after two solid runs, most recently at Navan last time.
The Gowran Park Race is an intriguing contest and the one that appeals here is Aidan O'Brien's Top Class.
Charles O'Brien's Lord Admiral has been a frustrating sort, but he ran a fine race behind Danak on his latest and is open to progression.
Crossing ran a good race at this venue to win a race over a trip well short of his best and has the scope to improve again over the longer trip of the Kilkenny Handicap.
Recent Killarney winner Market Minstrel bids for a quick follow-up in the second division of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap, while Thursday's all-the-way Limerick scorer Sunshine Guest goes in search of further success in the Gowran Handicap.
