Doorstep Doctor

This week I 've been inundated with questions regarding central heating systems since the Eddie Hobbs TV programme Show me the Money was aired a fortnight ago. It seems that everyone has some sort of a problem with their heating system. Having watched the programme myself, I have at last found what I consider to be the only solution to the problem of an inef"cient central heating system, namely, 'The Cremin Tank' (www. oxyvent. com).

Q My previous house had a radiator heating system that I was never happy with it since its installation.

Some rooms never heated properly. In conjunction with the radiators, I had to use two electric heaters in the winter to heat the rooms. I was constantly bleeding the radiator in the hall and in fact two years ago that same radiator leaked and when the plumber took it off it was corroded. What really annoyed me was the fact that my fuel bill was about /1,500 per year and I still had a cold, inefficient heating system. I built a new house which I moved into last year, I put a lot of time into ensuring that above all else, the heating system would be top-class. I am now back with the same old problems eg rooms not heating properly, air in the system and paying a fortune on heating bills with no results.

A The Cremin Tank should solve your problems. When it is installed in your heating system it captures the air in the system and releases it automatically. You will never need to bleed your radiators again. When the air is removed from your heating system into the Cremin Tank the flow of water through your system is increased by 33% allowing every radiator in the system to heat at an even temperature. Naturally the water will then return much quicker to the boiler to be reheated which means the boiler only needs to be firing for a shorter period of time to reach the operating temperature. This will in turn give a significant fuel saving of approximately 30%. It will also extend the life of your radiators and reduce the risk of leaks in the system. The Cremin Tank gives an almost even temperature between the top and bottom of the radiators in all rooms resulting in far more intensive heat in your rooms. The result of all this is a more uniform heat between the ceiling and floor level allowing thermostatic valves to function to perfection.

Q I installed underfloor heating in my house and I operate it for 24 hours as recommended by the manufacturer. It will not build up the heat in some rooms despite having it on constantly. I am finding it very expensive to operate and would like to know if there is anything that can be done to allow me to reduce the operating times and increase the temperatures in the rooms.

A It is totally unacceptable to have a heating system operating for 24 hours a day in an energy conscious environment. The Cremin Tank totally transforms underfloor heating. The heat builds up in a few hours, not days. All the floors heat at an even temperature, no hot or cold spots. It operates like the conventional system, turn it on and have heat almost instantly any time you want it.

It is recommended that underfloor heating systems be flushed out by a professional regularly to release the trapped air. This is a process where all the water must be flushed out of the pipes under the floor and refilled with fresh water. The Cremin Tank does not allow the air to enter the underfloor heating pipe saving you the task of repeated maintenance and the need to flush out the system. There is a 50% fuel saving due to the efficiency of the system.

Q Having read the answer to your first query on 13 May last I now believe my central heating system has reached "some trouble in the future with gun barrel piping". The system has been in place for 40 years and four out of 11 radiators (including the first one from the boiler) are producing little if any heat. Could you advise on remedial work such as flushing out the system or replacing the said radiators.

A Due to the presence of air in your system over the years, the radiators and piping would be severely corroded, causing a build up of silt in the system. This silt would accumulate and attach itself inside your radiators and piping. It may not be possible to remove this by flushing out the system. If this is the case you are left with no alternative but to get new radiators and re-pipe them.

This can be done by a drop down system, which means that you can pipe the radiators from the attic or first floor saving you the need to cut the floors causing major disturbance. I would not normally recommend a drop down system due to the accumulation of air in such a system but if you install The Cremin Tank you will have the air removed automatically and will have an efficient, economic maintenance free heating system.
