IN the spring of 2005 landlord and developer Kent Swig made the single biggest residential buy in US history at the time, putting $545m into a rental building with the population of a small village in one of the fastest-growing square miles of New York.
"Swig is seeking to transform the 58-storey Sheffield, a large utilitarian collection of studio- and one-bed rentals into Sheffield57, a 600-unit luxury condo worthy of nouveau white-glove neighbours surrounding Columbus Circle, such as the Time Warner Residences and 15 Central Park West, " said Matt English, managing director of Christies Estates, which is exclusively presenting a range of studios, two- and three-bed condominiums to the Irish market.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Irish investors to acquire prime New York real estate at a time when the dollar has plummeted to a 35-year low against the British pound and in recent weeks it has been trading at $1.36 to the euro, " said English.
Located near Central Park at Columbus Circle, Sheffield57 contains properties ranging from studios of almost 600sq ft all the way up to larger four-bed apartments comprising over 2,000sq ft.
The building's features also include a landscaped sculpture garden, a private-entry drive, wiring for wi-fi internet, pet spa, an array of fitness facilities, an open-air pool, a poolside sun terrace, a private concierge, a screening room, a children's play area, a private residents' restaurant and lounge and Club 57 on 57th floor.
At current exchange rates, some of the units in Sheffield57 are priced at under 600,000.
