Everything's peachy at Irishtown House - Irishtown House, Co Meath: AMV 3.3m
Valerie Shanley

IRISHTOWN House is right in the heart of the Meath countryside, seven miles from the growing town of Ashbourne, with both Drogheda and Navan a 10-mile drive away. The setting for the 1920s-built house is distinctive, approached along a treelined avenue into parkland of over 40 acres.

Framing the residence are impressive gardens, abundant with mature trees and shrubs, and a kitchen garden, sunny patio and the particularly attractive sounding peach house. These grounds are also linked to the house through either French windows or French doors in most of the of the ground-floor reception rooms.

Accommodation opens from the entrance porch to the inner hall with two feature french windows and woodpanelled walls. The main drawing room has an Adamsstyle fireplace, ornate pillars, recessed window seat, French doors to the patio and another door to the conservatory. The dining room is equally classical in layout, and connects to the kitchen.

A mature grapevine in the conservatory will be of interest to budding winemakers.

The fitted kitchen has excellent pine storage presses, separate larder and sliding doors to a sunny patio.

Other rooms at groundfloor level include the home office, boot room, sports room and an informal family sitting room with a beamed ceiling and a brick, open fireplace.

Upstairs are five bedrooms, the master with an en-suite bathroom and a separate dressing room. The main bathroom, like all other rooms on this level, has a French window, while the windows on the landing open to a balcony.

Outside, the River Hurley runs through one of the four paddocks. In the clock tower yard are a number of loose boxes and other outdoor storage rooms.

Produce from the kitchen garden, peach house and the conservatory's grapes are harvested in late summer, making Irishtown House something of a prize for those dreaming of an organic-producing idyll in the country, an ideal stud farm or riding school, or simply a rather special country home.
