Periodic past in elegant Rathmines - No 26 Maxwell Road: 1.8m
Valerie Shanley

THIS elegant Rathmines home is a fine example of the early Victorian era, built in 1855, and designed to take maximum benefit from generous proportions and the decorative architectural style of the period. The property was originally for sale by public auction last autumn, and is now on the market by private treaty through selling agents DNG.

The natural light is particularly attractive in the main living room with dual aspect sash windows which retain their working shutters. Other authentic features here are the timber floors, marble fireplace with cast iron inset and slate base, picture rail, plaster cornicing and decorative ceiling rose. The dining room mirrors the drawing room, with similar period features including a marble fireplace.

Both rooms lead off the elegant entrance hall.

The large kitchen/breakfast room is informal, an echo of country farmhouse with painted white presses and vintage style, cream Aga set into the original brick surround fireplace. Adjacent is the utility room with tiled floor and double doors to the rear garden.

The largest of the four bedrooms is also defined by peroid features, including cast iron fireplace and shuttered sash windows. In the adjoining en-suite, a roll top bath takes pride of place. Bedroom two, also with original features, is next to the shower room with Acquastream power shower. Two remaining bedrooms have built-in wardrobes.

At the bottom of the southerly orientated garden is a large garage (16' 11" x 31' 9") for off street parking, but also offering the option for conversion to a studio.
