NEWS IN BRIEF

FOXROCK HOPING IT'S GOOD TO TALK

Nobody is talking, not to the press in any event, but informed rumour has it that Foxrock Golf Club of"cials are holding a special meeting this week to discuss with the membership details of an approach by developers eager to purchase the club's lands for development.

A figure of 400 million has been mentioned in association with a transfer to a new golf course at Cherrywood - where developer, Liam Carroll, has a holding of 412 acres acquired during his takeover of Dunloe Ewart.

Cosgraves, whose deal with Dun Laoghaire Golf Club is coming to fruition very soon, have also been mentioned.

WOODBROOK BOOKINGS JUST ONE CLICK AWAY

Woodbrook have always been one of the most advanced golf clubs in the country and appear determined to maintain this ethos by offering members a full on-line booking facility.

Members may continue to book through the caddy masters but the on-line system will cut out the need for repeated telephone calls.

The system will also operate for visitors, societies and corporate bookings as it is phased in through the year.

CONATY DISPLAY IS SIMPLY CHAMPION

There was jubilation in Ashbourne on Thursday night as Dawn Marie Conaty gained champion status by winning the Midland Ladies' Senior title at Mullingar.

Conaty has been a sturdy competitor in all the big events for ladies over the past few years.

She did a superb job this time when leading the quali"ers by four strokes from Mary Dowling of New Ross - and con"rming this form by winning two of her four matchplay rounds on the 13th and 15th greens!

In an interesting run , she defeated two Woodbrook players in succession by seeing off Sue Philips on the last green in the semi-"nal and Sandra Atkinson in the "nal.

GILMORE GRABS THE GLORY IN ROSCOMMON

The inaugural Roscommon Ladies' Scratch Cup proved a thriller last Sunday as Emma Gilmore from Mountbellew out-gunned local favourite, Deirdre Walsh.

Walsh, who plays out of Milltown but is an honorary member in Roscommon, had a 78 in the "rst round but mounted a big afternoon challenge with a 72. Gilmore, however, produced a 74 and a 73!

WEXFORD WITH ONE EYE ON THE FUTURE

Watch for Wexford coming through with young champions in the next few years under the guidance of Rosslare professional, Johnny Young.

A total of 36 players took part in the recently-ended 2006-2007 Golf Development Squad programme and hopes are high that some will make a showing in the various boys' championships scheduled over the coming months.

They were organised into age groups for training at various clubs in the county and awards were issued to the leading students as follows: Under-18s - Chris Drumm and Caolan Barron (both Rosslare);

Under-16s - Gary Collins (Rosslare) and Mary Murphy (Enniscorthy);

Under-14s - Jamie Dreelan (Enniscorthy) and Ross Young (Rosslare); Under-12s - Mark Kavanagh (Enniscorthy) and Michael Ryan (New Ross).

Now the search is on for new talent for the 2007-2008 season, which starts in September. Players eager to take part should contact John Young at 053-9132032.
