A MAN who is going on a two-week holiday to Spain wants to tag his five children to prevent any repeat of the Madeleine McCann abduction.
Martin Kavanagh, a bar manager from Lucan, Co Dublin is flying to Salou tonight and will give his young children walkie talkies so he can be in contact with them wherever they are.
Martin says that it only takes a second for a child to disappear and wants the option of having his children tagged with a chip that can be located using satellite. He says that animals and expensive cars can be fitted with security tags, so why not children?
"I've been looking into this for the last three years but the technology hasn't been introduced. I don't see why it hasn't though. All it would take would be a little chip.
Dogs and racehorses have them fitted and children should be no different."
Martin has five children, Ian (13), Robyn (9), Chloe (6), Ross (4) and Alana (2). Previously, he was in Spain with his wife Amanda when Robyn went missing for a time.
"We turned for a second on a holiday three years ago and Robyn was gone. She was found almost immediately playing with toys but all it takes is a second.
"If a child is tagged and goes missing they would be found within a couple of minutes.
"Also, if somebody was going to take a child and thought that out of 200 potential victims 50 were tagged it would be a major deterrent, " Martin added.
"I will be giving all my kids walkie talkies so if something happened they could get us quickly. Prevention is better than cure. It took the Portuguese police 12 hours to close the borders when Madeleine was snatched so I wouldn't be totally confident with the Spanish or Portuguese.
"If anybody knows anything that can be done to introduce chips I'd love to hear from them. My children come first. If you buy a new Mercedes you have to get a GPS locator system before it can be insured. What's the difference with children?"
