HENRY SHEFFLIN looks set to become the second-most prolific hurler of all time this afternoon. Two points in Portlaoise would be enough to see the Ballyhale clubman move above Cork legend Christy Ring on the all-time top scorers list and with his Kilkenny side expected to get past Offaly with relative ease in the Leinster semi-final, Shefflin is likely to easily achieve that target.
At present he has scored 18-252 in his 35 championship outings, his total of 306 points leaving him just one behind Ring. However he still has quite a way to go if he's to overhaul his fellow countyman Eddie Keher. The Inistioge corner-forward scored a remarkable 35-334 on his way to six All Ireland titles, leaving him more than 100 points ahead of his nearest rivals. In recent seasons Shefflin has passed other hurling greats such as Nicky Rackard and DJ Carey on his way to capturing seven Leinster titles, six All Stars and four All Irelands.
However it's possible Shefflin will take over top spot in scoring averages by this evening. Having played 50 times in championship hurling between 1959 and 1977, Keher walked away from the game having amassed 8.78 points per game.
With the likes of Rackard hitting 7.74 per game, Carey scoring 5.05 and Ring weighing in with just 4.79 it is only Shefflin that comes close to that magical number, and should he reach the 11-point mark today he will surpass it.
