PIETERSEN HITS 50 BUT IS DISMISSED BY FREAK

Kevin Pietersen was dismissed in bizarre fashion in his bid to claim his first Old Trafford century as England progressed towards a matchwinning lead against the West Indies in the third npower test yesterday.

After scoring 68 Pietersen was out in freak circumstances as England established a 369-run lead by reaching 228 for three at tea on the third day. With a century in his sights, however, he took evasive action when all-rounder Dwayne Bravo dug in a short ball only to get hit on the helmet which fell onto his stumps. It was only a minor setback to England's progress, however, with opener Alastair Cook progressing towards his sixth test century in only 17 appearances and was unbeaten on 89 at the interval.
