RACING: GOODWOOD REPORT
Fast-improving apprentice William Buick continued his fine form with a beautifully-timed ride on Dingaan in the Empire Property Handicap at Goodwood. After a slow start, Buick switched the Andrew Balding-trained 20-1 shot across the track to come with a late flourish.
It was a first Goodwood success for Buick, who said:
"It's always nice to ride a winner at a big track. He's a talented horse but he's quite funny and I just needed to get him a clear run and not hit the front too soon."
John Dunlop applied blinkers to Munsef for the first time in the Empire Property Group Conditions Stakes and the 5-6 favourite enjoyed a much-needed confidence booster.
In a tactical affair, Richard Hills dictated proceedings from the front, stealing an advantage with a couple of furlongs to run and coming nicely clear by three-and-ahalf lengths from High Heel Sneakers.
"He ran a very good race on his first run of the season in the John Porter at Newbury, then disappointed us in the Yorkshire Cup, " said Arundel-based Dunlop. "We tried blinkers today and it worked. We are delighted. If he went to Royal Ascot now, it would be in the Hardwicke."
Another suave bit of pacesetting riding came from Dane O'Neill aboard Dunelight, who ran away with the feature Empire Property Group On The House Stakes.
Sent off at 7-2 against Godolphin's 5-4 favourite Army Of Angels, the market leader never got a look in to take second as Dunelight sauntered home by over four lengths.
"Just the job, " said winning trainer Clive Cox. "We had always hoped he would win his listed race at some point and the way he won it, he could well go on. We have a few options open to us at this stage and we might just take him abroad now and find a Group Three for him to go in."
