EXPLAINING THE RULES: RULE 11.4 PLAYING FROM OUTSIDE THE TEEING GROUND Q. What happens when a player plays from outside the teeing ground when starting a hole?
A. The teeing ground is defined by the tee-markers. If a player tees off outside the teeing ground, the stroke is cancelled and replayed and no penalty is incurred. A player can stand outside the teeing ground as long as the ball is teed within the boundaries of the tee-markers.
In stroke play, the player will incur a penalty of two strokes and must replay the ball from within the teemarkers. If a player starts the next hole without correcting their mistake, or if the hole in question is the final hole in the round and the player leaves the putting green without correcting their mistake, they will be disqualified. Any subsequent stroke by a player on the hole prior to the correction of their mistake do not count in their score.
GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK Chipping the ball from the greenside rough With the warm summer weather now upon us, the grass is growing a lot faster and so the rough is thicker around the greens.
When chipping from greenside rough you cannot get as much backspin on the ball as you could from a tighter lie. To counteract this, add extra height to the shape of the shot to help the ball stop on the green.
To add extra height you will first need to open up your stance and then open up the clubface to add more loft to the shot. When you swing, it is important to accelerate through the ball so that your club finishes pointing along your intended target line. The height that has been added to your shot will make up for the lack of backspin and your ball will land softly on the green.
