Wow! The USGA knows how to turn the screws on the best players. Amongst moves to ensure that the Oakmont course for next week's US Open will present a "most rigorous, yet fair, examination of golf skills, testing all forms of shot-making", they have decided to play the par-3 eighth at 288-yards.
Yes, a par-3 of almost 300yards - but with the proviso that they can reduce it to as little as 252-yards if the wind blows strongly. In similar vein, they are prepared to reduce the par-5 12th from 667-yards to 632 yards if they are in generous mood on the day.
Oakmont is to become the first club to host eight US Opens and it has lengthened the course by 284-yards since the 1994 Open to a new high of 7,230-yards with a par of 70.
A notable strategic change to the course sees the famous Church Pews bunkers between holes three and four revised as follows: number of pews now 12 (previously 8), area covered 26,000 square feet (previously 15,000), yardage covered tee to green 30 to 100 (previously 25 to 70), depth three-and-a-half to four feet (previously three feet). A new age and a new look monster.
