ORGANISERS for the 2008 ploughing championships have narrowed down the choice of venue to four potential locations in counties Kilkenny, Kerry, Wexford and Galway.
The event would be a huge boost to the region wherever it's held, bringing in an estimated Euro15 million to the local economy with over 220,000 visitors to the tournament.
The tournament is set to be held near the town of Tullamore in County Offaly for September of this year with next year's venue being decided in the coming weeks.
"We will definitely be making an announcement before the end of the month, " the managing director of the National Ploughing Association, Anna May McHugh, told the Sunday Tribune.
"We have yet to decide on a final venue. Obviously we are in negotiations with farmers at the moment and lots of things such as infrastructure and being near a main road come into it. Wherever it gets held, whether it's a village or a little townland, it's always remembered by everyone who goes for being the place where the ploughing championship goes.
It's the equivalent of four allIreland finals. There are lots of places that would like this event, " she said.
