Woodview House, Ferns, Co Wexford: AMV Euro1.75m - Home where history is in the details
Caroline Allen

BUILT around 1755 by the de Rinzy family of nearby Clobemon Hall, the recently restored Woodview House, Ballingale, Ferns, Co Wexford, retains its period character and historical links.

Charred timbers from a fire during the 1798 Rising were uncovered during restoration as well as written evidence from its incarnation as the Ballingale Poultry Farm and Gardening School for Women, formed in 1916.

The house extends over two and three storeys over a semi-basement, with the front elevation comprising three bays and rising up to a granite-capped parapet.

Set on six acres, it is at the head of an avenue, flanked by mature trees, with elevated views across the Slaney valley. The front door, surrounded on the inside by rope and tassel carving, leads into the reception hall which in turn opens into the principal reception rooms and stair hall.

The main house offers 436 sq m (4,693sq ft) of accommodation while a guest cottage/annexe provides another 92sq m (990sq ft).

Principal living accommodation includes an entrance hall; kitchen/breakfast room with fitted units, granite worktops and stove; dining room; parlour; basement living room with stove; laundry room; basement kitchen; rear hall; seven bedrooms (two en-suite); and two bathrooms.

Within the courtyard and opening into the walled garden, the annexe features exposed stone walls. Accommodation comprises a living room; kitchen; two bedrooms and bathroom.

The walls of the original garden join the back of the house to create an enclosed garden, with courtyard. A paddock provides grazing in front of the house. With reroofed stables and brightly painted doors, the courtyard offers parking and is accessible to the house through a second courtyard.

There is stabling in traditional stone block and two other large stores, one extending to 176sq m (1,894sq ft), offering potential for conversion into American barnstyle stabling or workshop/ home office.
