The censorship seems to have sailed at last. . .
BURIED in the report of film censor John Kelleher for last year is a footnote: "No decisions of the film censor in 2006 relating to cinema films were the subject of appeal to the Censorship of Films Appeal Board." At one time in the 1970s, there was a backlog of nearly 100 censorship decisions awaiting appeal. That's not the only good news in the report. There was a 15% increase in the number of limited release films distributed last year, a result of the decision in 2004 to reduce the certification charge for movies released on six prints or less. However, arthouse and subltitled films are still only a small proportion of those released here. Of the 201 films certified from a single country of origin, 170 were from either. the UK or the US. Of the remaining 64 films released - classifed as multiple country of origin - 56 had US or UK involvement. Surely so-called multicultural Ireland has a wider interest in the cinema of France, Germany, Spain, Japan and India than these figures suggest?
