Michael Brecker Pilgrimage Emarcy . . . .
APART from the enigmatic title, there is little here to suggest that this was the swansong of perhaps America's most popular living saxophonist. Brecker was dying of a rare bone disorder when this was recorded, and everyone on the session knew it, but there is no sentimentality. Instead there is a set of purposefully swinging tunes, well suited to the saxophonist's flawless timing and harmonic athleticism.
The fact that he is backed by Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Jack DeJohnette doesn't hurt a bit. A fitting epitaph for perhaps the most influential player of the tenor saxophone since Coltrane.
