Are you tired of having the same three hairstyles to hand that you alternate throughout the week? Hair down, hair in ponytail, hair in bun. Even worse, do you have just one hairstyle to your name? Such as, hair down, then straightened with a GHD for the weekend - sound familiar?
Well here at Beauty School, we're saying NO to boring hair. The time has come to get even slightly more experimental, so we've compiled some more exciting hair-dos to get you through the week. And no, they won't require much (or even any) skill.
Here goes. . .
PRETTIER PONY-TAILS A ponytail is easy to do, takes about 30 seconds and is practical for work. But it's also a tad boring so why not mix it up? For a softer look, for instance, grab some random strands of hair and curl them with a curling tongs. Then, gather the hair at the nape of the neck, letting the looser strands fall free. Secure with a sturdy clip or plain black bobbin (scrunchies are SO 1995), tugging hair slightly free for a looser look.
Ta-da!
If you have less time to hand, however, try a classy ponytail. This easy style makes quite a difference to the traditional pony.
Simply put hair back tightly in a smooth, low pony. Grab a strand of hair from the pony and wrap it carefully around the bobbin until the bobbin is no longer visible.
Secure with hair pins that are the same colour as your hair.
BEAUTIFUL BUNS There is nothing more sophisticated than having your hair back in a bun but putting it back in more intricate styles can be very eye-catching. Some of these styles would be perfect for any big occasions coming up this summer.
For a plaited bun, secure hair in a low ponytail and divide into three sections.
Plait each section as far down as you can go before tying with a discreet elastic. Wrap each braid around the base of the bun, pinning as you go. Secure all ends firmly and spray liberally with a firm-hold hairspray (we love L'Oreal Ellnet, handbag size, Euro3.95).
For a more tousled look, make a ponytail just above the ears. Taking random strands, backcomb using just your fingers. This involves holding the strand tightly and moving fingers against the hair briskly.
When the pony is sufficiently messed, secure in a loose bun with hair pins. Allow a few strands to fall around the face. For a more formal occasion, consider getting a fresh flower of the same colour as your dress and sticking it in the bun.
Sixties volume is very in this season, and can look amazing when teamed with a bun. With your hair down, take sizeable chunks from the top of your head towards the back, ensuring you leave a layer of hair to smooth over later. With a comb or hairbrush, backcomb briskly from the base of the hair until there is sizeable volume evenly spread from left to right. Tie hair in a ponytail at the nape of the neck, ensuring the smooth layer of hair covers any frizz.
Secure in a bun with pins.
ALLURING ACCESORIES Finally, even wearing your hair down can be more interesting, especially when accessories are added to the mix.
For instance, drop into Hickeys or any other sewing shop and pick up a short length of ribbon in some bright colours you think will suit you.
When wearing your hair down next, try tying one of the ribbons around your hair in a headband effect. Tie firmly at nape of neck underneath the hair - it doesn't matter if some ribbon peaks out. Alternate the ribbons throughout the coming months.
Alternatively pick up some headbands and headscarves to add some variety to your every-day down style.
