Chilling suicide diary of Dubliner who was intent on taking his own life
Mick McCaffrey Security Editor

THE Dublin man who committed suicide with another man he met over the internet spent several months planning his death and looking for people to join him.

Nicholas Jameson, 24, walked into a lake in Co Tyrone eight days ago after agreeing a suicide pact with 20-year-old Brian McGlade from Omagh.

In dozens of disturbing posts on a notorious internet site dedicated to suicide methods, Jameson revealed in detail his plans to end his life and sought a partner to accompany him.

He had originally intended to commit suicide in his family home in Walkinstown, Dublin, but had to abandon this plan after his parents cancelled a trip abroad. He also booked flights to Eastbourne in England on 31 May with the intention of jumping off a cliff, but did not go ahead with this.

Jameson, who suffered from serious depression and had attempted suicide before, first posted messages on the controversial alt. suicide. holiday internet newsgroup last St Patrick's Day.

He called himself 'Alex' and went under the user name 'billyumi'. In his first post, he said: "is anyone who is ctb ['catch the bus', a euphemism for suicide] and who is living in ireland looking for a suicide partner?

i was originally planning to ctb by myslf in my home using the 'charcoal grill/bathroom method' but unfortunately my folks have now decided that there not going abroad after all."

He continued: "i dont really care what method i use now but since i cant do it in my own home anymore i would like to ctb with someone. If anyone is interested please let me know."

There was little response to Jameson's pleas and he made only passing reference to his suicidal plans over the next few weeks but offered advice to others who wanted to end their own lives.

On 16 May he issued another appeal and said he would be willing to travel to the UK to meet somebody for a joint suicide. The 24year-old said he had been researching venues in Ireland.

"Another method which i have been contemplating recently is drowning. I am currently researching lakes and rivers to find the most discreet place to do it. I do have one place already in my mind (here in ireland) but i have not been there in a while so i will have to pay a visit to that site to see if anything has changed but it is a very good location for drowning as from what i can remember it is a very quiet and discreet place."

He seemed to be resigned to committing suicide and said that "only people who are 100 percent committed to committing suicide with a partner need apply! !".

The following day Jameson revealed that he had found a death partner, but she seemed to have pulled out of the plan. He posted: "I am planning to travel to the UK from 31 May till 3 June to commit suicide by jumping off the cliffs of Beachy Head in Eastbourne.

"I am currently looking for a suicide partner to jump with me. . i had originally found a suicide partner to do this with but i hav'nt unfortunatley heard from her in the last 5 days. She had been severley depressed and i think that she may have attempted suicide within the last few days."

On 24 May he wrote: "I gotta get outa this place aswell! ! badly! !"

before adding "I think once you've come to the realization that you are well and truly f***ed and there is absolutley no hope for you then the pain or method of suicide does'nt really matter. . all you want is out".

Just eight days before his death, Jameson still hadn't made contact with Brian McGlade on the internet.

He issued another appeal for a partner, saying: "im think of finding a nice discreet lake with clean enough water. . then once there i'll fill up my back pack with bricks and stones to way it down and then put it on my back and tie the straps at the front together with a small bicycle lock preventing me from pulling it off".

The following day he told a woman in a web discussion about what happens to bodies after they drown.

"To be honest with ya i could'nt really give a sh*t if me head ended up floating ashore somewhere in Botswana. . getting the deed done is all im concerned about."

In his final post on 3 June, just six days before his suicide, Jameson seems to have planned his death although he does not go into any detail except to say, "it's like the lake is calling to me saying 'hurry up alex im awaiting for you' and im all like 'oh no Mrs Lake i have to tie up a few loose ends before i can jump in your end'".

He seeks advice about suicide by drowning and is told to wear baggy clothing because it's hard to swim with wet clothes. He replies:

"cheers Kat, good plan".

Nick Jameson travelled to the North a few days before his death and met Brian McGlade, and they committed suicide together. Gardai learned about Nick Jameson's death when they were contacted by the PSNI last Tuesday. He had never come to their attention before.

Both victims wrote letters to their families explaining their actions. This is the first known case in Ireland of a joint arranged suicide organised over the internet.

Detectives from Crumlin station have taken Nick Jameson's laptop for examination and his mother Elizabeth and sister Mary are being comforted by relatives.

Nick Jameson's tragic path to suicide, in his ownwords . . .

17 March Hi, is anyone who is ctb and who is living in ireland looking for a suicide partner? i was originally planning to ctb by myslf in my home using the 'charcoal grill/bathroom method' but unfortunatley my folks have now decided that there not going abroad afterall. . ah well sh*t happens i suppose. . i dont really care what method i use now but since i cant do it in my own home anymore i would like to ctb with someone. .

16 May Is there anyone from Ireland or the UK here who is looking for a partner to commit suicide with?

Let me first just say that i am not some wierdo who is looking to hook up with girls online or who's preying on depressed people for sex. . i am simply looking for someone who like me is 110% certain that this is what they want and who is looking for support by doing it with me on whatever day we choose to go ahead with it. .

17 May i am planning to travel to the UK from 31st May till 3rd June to commit suicide by jumping off the cliffs of Beachy Head in Eastbourne. . i am currently looking for a suicide partner to jump with me. . i had originally found a suicide partner to do this with but i hav'nt unfortunatley heard from her in the last 5 days. . she had been severley depressed and i think that she may have attempted suicide within the last few days. . so that's possibly why there's been no contact form her. . . i've everything sorted and im ready to go. . flight tickets booked, all my farewell and legal letters done.

19 May i'v have already got my flight(s) for dirt cheap on the internet and as for my accomadion i've only paid 89.70 (sterling) for my 4 days there. . so if my plan somehow does'nt work out and im forced to return home should'nt be to much out of pocket.

24 May . . . a couple of months ago the thoughts of jumping would have terrified me but now that i've lost hope all together the thoughts of jumping actually makes me feel happy that it's all going to be over soon. . i think once you've come to the realization that you are well and truly f***ed and there is absolutley no hope for you then the pain or method of suicide does'nt really matter. . all you want is out.

1 June im think of finding a nice discreet lake with clean enough water. . then once there i'll "ll up my back pack with bricks and stones to way it down and then put it on my back and tie the straps at the front together with a small bicycle lock preventing me from pulling it off. .

then i'll take 45 (10mg Valium) altogether and start drinking a litre of vodka straight. . then once is start to feel like im blacking out i'll quickly jump into the lake and drown . . i cant swim either so that helps. . do ya rekon i have a chance?

9 June Nick Jameson walks into Gortin lake, Co Tyrone with Brian McGlade. Both die from drowning.
