DUNDALK Stadium, Ireland's first all-weather race track, is set to open at the end of August. The 35m facility will stage floodlit horseracing for the first time in this country on a track made of plastic fibres, PVC granules and special highgrade sand. The upgraded greyhound stadium, which will still feature dog racing, now has a 10-furlong allweather horse track as well as a 400-seat restaurant and several bars. There's also a weigh room, a stable yard for 130 horses, a parade ring, a bookmakers' ring and a new kennelling block.
The redevelopment of the stadium has been part-funded by Horse Racing Ireland, Bord na gCon and private investors. Construction on the all-weather track started last September and the track will be completed within two months.
The Polytrack's various components are blended together and are given a wax coating. The end product reduces hoof penetration and keeps the horses 'on the top', decreasing the risk of stress and strain as well as improving energy return.
"We have received tremendous interest in sponsorship opportunities at the stadium given the fact that At The Races, the UK TV station, are covering our entire race programme and the figures set certainly offer value for money, " says Emma Meehan, Dundalk Stadium sales and marketing manager.
"We have several mediums within the stadium to allow companies and individuals to target their customer base, ranging from race-card advertising, on-course and inhouse advertising and closed-circuit television. We can therefore tailor packages to suit everyone's budgetary requirements."
Dundalk Stadium has been allocated 12 fixtures for 2007.
The opening fixture will be on Sunday 26 August and the first evening meeting comes a month later on Thursday 27 September. There will then be two runs of five consecutive Friday evening meetings: from 28 September to 26 October and from 9 November to 7 December.
