THERE'S good news for ecoconscious folk in Mayo where the country's first energy efficient housing development is up for sale.
Suan Tra at Aughleam on the Erris Peninsula is being built using the Super E housing method pioneered by the Canadian government.
Building regulations now stipulate that all new homes must be energy rated to assess their energy efficiency, which explains why Super E homes are an attractive and sound proposition.
Their patented method of building includes specialised insulation with controlled ventilation and high-performance windows to deliver a home that is guaranteed to score a high Building Energy Rating (BER).
Canadian Super E directly addresses two key measures in a building's energy rating. Firstly, attention is paid to the insulation in the walls, attic and floors. Then measures are taken to achieve controlled healthy ventilation. Taking a whole-house approach, the method utilises a continuous air barrier that separates the internal living space from the elements of the exterior. After everything is carefully sealed the home is pressure tested by pumping out the air to ensure there are no leaks or draughts for valuable heat to escape through.
This unique ventilation system provides each room in the house with fresh air while a patented Heat Recovery Ventilator unit ingeniously captures the heat from stale air being exhausted and warms fresh air being taken in . . . which further minimises wasted heat energy. By saving energy, Super E houses save homeowners cash while helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Typically timber frame construction, Super E homes can be built from any conventional building material and are guaranteed a high BER.
