TRIED & TASTED - SPONGE CAKES
Jilian Bolger

WHAT could be better than a nice cuppa and a slice of guilty pleasure. We tasted some sponge cakes and came to realise that a generous filling goes a long way.

Marks & Spencer Victoria Cake /4.99 Quite a coarse textured sponge that doesn't taste particularly fresh. The jam and buttercream filling are overly sweet, and there's not very much filling.

Disappointing.

*Superquinn Fresh Cream Sponge /4.99 A lovely light, fluffy sponge that tastes home baked and looks appetising.

The cream and jam filling is very generous. An excellent buy.

***** Teatime Express Australian Layer Cake /5.98 Several thin layers of moist Maderia cake are sandwiched together with good buttercream filling and nice jam. The cake is covered in a fine crumb coating that adds a lovely nuttiness. May be too sweet for some, but we all found it delicious.

**** Tesco Fresh Cream Victoria Sponge /6.04 This pale sponge is moist and very light but lacks any kind of flavour. The jam filling is too thin, and overall it tastes bland.
