Q I recently had an interview for a senior position within a company. I now have a second interview with my prospective boss - over the phone. Is there anything extra I need to consider?
A First interviews allow prospective employers to get a feel for all candidates. Having narrowed this list down to those most suited, the second interview will be much tougher. They are generally conducted by someone you will be working with. Your competition will be stronger and the questions are likely to be more probing. You need to consider the following:
- The 'step up' required for this job.
- The skills you will bring.
- Your vision for the role - have 2 or 3 clear objectives.
- What will your priorities be if you're offered the job?
- What will you deliver in the first 12 months? Give examples. How will you do this?
- Consider any industry specific issues and potential salary discussions . . . be ready for these.
For the phone interview clear and concise communication will be vital. Listen very carefully to the questions and take a moment to think through the answer before speaking. Speak clearly and slowly . . . ensure your interviewer can understand clearly what you are saying.
Be ready to receive or make the call at the appointed time.
Be somewhere quiet where you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably, preferably at a table or desk. Have your notes laid out clearly in front Aoife Coonagh of Carr Communications
