Juniper Girl lands Plate in last stride
NEWCASTLE REPORT Martin Jenkins

JUNIPER GIRL, the 5-1 favourite, snatched the John Smith's Northumberland Plate in the last stride from Macorville in a titanic finish at Newcastle yesterday.

Macorville (9-1) looked to have the "Pitmen's Derby" in safe keeping as Daragh O'Donohoe kicked on over two furlongs out after Winged D'Argent had led the field into the rain-softened straight.

Tilt, a 12-1 shot, went after him but he could make no further progress in the last 100 yards while 5lb claimer Luke Morris conjured a telling late run from Michael Bell's filly on the far rail.

There was nothing between Macorville and Juniper Girl in the last 50 yards but Juniper Girl got up on the post to win by a short head. Tilt was a further three lengths back in third with Al Eile (11-2) fourth.

"It's unbelievable, " an ecstatic Morris said after the race. "It's brilliant and so exciting - she's an absolute star.

"I was a little bit further back than I wanted to be but I bided my time and waited for the splits to open. She stayed on and she gets every yard of this trip.

"Macorville just probably idled in front but in a battle you definitely want her on your side, " he said.

Macorville's trainer George Moore was pleased with how his horse had run but was sure he would hold on."I honestly thought he had won, but it wasn't to be, " he said.
