CAREER DOCTOR

Q My job has changed since a recent acquisition. I now have a new boss, my role has diminished, and I'm not getting job satisfaction any more. I don't see any career opportunities here, but am not sure where to look.

A In acquisition situations, you often need to prove yourself again, especially if the previous management team have left. This is an ideal opportunity to start planning and managing your next career move.

Firstly, this means stepping back and assessing your current situation thoroughly; your role, personal contribution and achievements, skills and experience.

Reflect on what motivated you previously and what's demotivating you now. Ask yourself why. Identify specific skills, experience and personal strengths you employed to deliver these projects. Also, list any strengths identified in personality/psychometric tests or performance reviews you may have done. Highlight skills that are transferable to other departments, organisations and industries.

Next consider what your ideal job would be? Consider company culture and your own values. Examine all job options; investigate internal possibilities . . . opportunities often arise through re-structuring. Review the papers and recruitment websites for external roles that might suit your skills and interests.

Finally, update your CV with skills and achievements relevant to the role. Write a strong cover letter outlining your interest in the job, and the skills and experience you can offer.
