DIRTY OLD TOWN

Without the photographic evidence to corroborate it, who could now imagine a Dublin without shopping centres, lavish city-centre apartments, traffic tailbacks and a general aura of prosperity? An exhibition by late photographer Hugh Doran, in the Irish Architectural Archive, Merrion Square, brings us back to that city of decay and dereliction but which still brimmed with life.

Doran was a printer by trade and a hugely talented amateur photographer whose key themes were his native city and architecture. In 1959, Desmond Guinness asked him to photograph Irish country houses and over the decades he captured some of Ireland's grandest houses, but arguably, it is his cityscapes which are even more compelling. It's a fascinating study in how far this city has come.

45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Open Tues-Fri, 10am5pm Tel 01 631300 www. iarc. ie.
