DUBBED 'The Flynnstones' by the late Dermot Morgan in his seminal Scrap Saturday radio show, the Flynns have never been far from controversy over their finances.
Back in the late 1980s, people couldn't help throwing money at Pee Flynn. His wife Dorothy opened three bogus non-resident accounts to hold some of Pee's money. She didn't know what she was doing and told the Mahon tribunal, "I don't remember." Pee didn't know what Dorothy was doing either: "I was not aware that my wife opened the account and when I did become aware I asked her to close it."
Between 1987 and 1989 when Flynn was a senior government minister, 94,230 went through these accounts. Pee told the tribunal he was not sure exactly where the money came from. He remembers the 50,000 Tom Gilmartin gave him in May or June 1989 which Gilmartin says was for the party.
He initially thought it was five grand but was positive it was meant for him personally, not the party.
When asked what he did with that money, he replied, "I took it away with me to Castlebar. I presume I took it out of my pocket at some stage and gave it to my wife."
In 1997, Dorothy went into farming with 37,000 from the Flynn fund. A 100-acre farm was purchased at Coolanass, Co Mayo. She is entitled to nearly Euro200,000 in grants over 20 years, for doing nothing with the land. Dorothy and Pee have always been adamant the money for the farm was not the 50,000 handed over by Gilmartin.
