Nugent told to return as trail goes cold on striker
Jeffrey Craig

SOCCER NEWS

PRESTON have ordered England striker David Nugent to return to pre-season training on Monday after talks over a 6m move away from Deepdale stalled. Sunderland pulled out of a move for Nugent, 22, despite agreeing a deal and talks with Portsmouth are on hold.

Nugent had set his heart on a move to boyhood idols Everton, but boss David Moyes will not pay more than 4m.

Preston boss Paul Simpson said: "I would like him to report back here on Monday and we will take if from there."

Sunderland boss Roy Keane shelved his interest in the striker after he failed to reach a decision on a move, and despite talking to Portsmouth a week ago, boss Harry Redknapp has still failed to land Nugent. Nugent had a break after playing for England under-21s in the European Championship and may still be biding his time in the hope Everton firm up their interest.

Simpson added: "Nuge has got a decision to make as to whether or not Portsmouth is the right club for him. If he decides it is not the right club then we are looking forward to seeing him again on Monday. I have spoken to his agent and told him I want him back in. He didn't tell me which way things were going so I'm still waiting to hear like everyone else. He just told me they had met up with Portsmouth earlier in the week and that was it.

"Portsmouth and Sunderland are the only two clubs who have agreed a fee with us. And the best of my knowledge no one else has even contacted us. I actually think we will be seeing the lad on Monday, although I am really guessing because I honestly don't know what David is thinking."

Simpson said: "I think the two clubs who have been in for him, and we have accepted offers from, are fantastic clubs. I'm sure they would both be a good move for him."

Meanwhile Sven-Goran Eriksson is elated after ending his football exile. Eriksson, 59, is back after signing a three-year contract at Manchester City. The Swede continued to be paid compensation by the Football Association for his time out the game. But he said: "It has been more stressful than being involved in any football match or sitting on the bench.

I'm very happy to be back in football."

Eriksson added: "Waking up in the morning after one month's holiday and not knowing what you're going to do was awful. I've never had that in my life before, so I'm pleased to be in football again. I feel much better having football work to do, and you can be sure I am 110 per cent committed to this challenge."
