DAN'S THE MAN . . . NEXT TO A LIMERICK MAN True or false? Dan Shanahan has scored at least one goal in every Munster championship game he's started for Waterford under Justin McCarthy.
Go through it, now. Justin's been with the Deise and with Dan since 2002. That's a lot of seasons, a lot of games.
Yet the answer is true. Every Munster championship game Dan has started for Justin, he's banged in at least one goal.
It's something of a trick question, of course. Dan never started in Munster in 2002 and 2003. By the end of the 2003 qualifiers, the fear mor from Lismore played in 17 championship games (11 as a starter) and failed to score a single goal. But since the 2004 league final, he's been a new player.
In his last 16 championship games, Dan has scored 13 goals.
And in his six Munster championship starts under McCarthy, he's scored at least one goal in every game. He's averaged a point a game, and banged in an incredible TEN goals. That's nearly 2-1 a game.
That's an unrivalled rate in the post JBM years but where does it stand in the all-time lists? Well, a goal today would put him joint third alongside Charlie McCarthy in the longest run of goals in Munster fixtures and just two behind a Limerick man, Paddy McMahon, who in the 30s and 40s raised a green flag in nine successive southern showdowns (see Table 1, above).
THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR McMAHON & CO
McMahon had his career cut short by a bad knee, but not before racking up a goal in 12 consecutive championship matches, a national record he shares with Wexford duo Nickey Rackard and Tony Doran (see Table 2, left).
To put that in perspective, DJ Carey never enjoyed a long goal scoring sequence, though he did have three three-in-a-rows (Paul Flynn, meanwhile, once went on a "ve-game sequence during 2002 and 2003).
McMahon's dozen games included four Munster finals, an All-Ireland semi-final and two AllIreland finals, the Ahane artiste locating the net on 22 occasions. In all he played 20 championship games, raising at least one green flag in 17, his career total ending at a healthy 31.
RING AND MACKEY:
MASTER GOAL SCORERS But not even he led the way when it came to goals in Munster finals.
To that he must bow to the big two. Christy Ring played in an incredible 19 Munster finals, and scored 12 goals in them. And Mick Mackey scored even more, notching 13 goals in his 12 final appearances.
When it comes to overall tallies though, Ring easily leads the way (as the table above shows) though interestingly the best average by a player who has played in more than four finals is his fellow east Corkman, Joe Deane. In all, there are four east Corkmen in the top 10, with John Fenton in third, and Jack Lynch squeezing in by virtue of his six goals, an incredible return for a midfielder.
Paul Flynn could join that company today if he scores eight points or more which is well within his compass. At the moment he has scored 3-23 in five Munster finals, an average of 6.2 ppg.
KING HENRY AND DJ: PASSING OF THE GUARD
Mention of lethal finishers, Henry Sheffiin reached another milestone during the Leinster final on Sunday.
By virtue of his nine points, five of which were from play, he inched past DJ Carey in the scores from play department.
DJ scored 27-57 from play in 57 games, a tally of 138, while Henry has now scored 17-91, a total of 142, despite having played 20 games less than DJ. Even allowing for the declining standards in Leinster . . . DJ would have come up against Offaly and Wexford when both counties were in robust health . . . it's a staggering achievement by Henry.
BETCHA DIDN'T KNOW THIS NOW. . .
DJ scored seven championship goals from frees or penalties, while Henry has only scored once from such a situation. Can you remember what game that rare goal came in?
