ALL IRELAND SFC FIRST ROUND QUALIFIER FERMANAGH v WEXFORD
Clones, 2.00 Referee Rory Hickey (Clare)
A meeting of the undercooked and the overdone here. Wexford have had the least amount of time to prepare of any of the teams in the qualifiers, while Fermanagh have had the most.
And neither, you'd have to imagine, is ideal.
At this remove, it scarcely matters a jot that Fermanagh ran Tyrone to a point all those weeks ago in Clones. Of more significance is the fact that they went across the border to Cavan a couple of weeks ago and this time came out just on the right side of a one-pointer. Okay, it was against Cavan and not Tyrone but then they're playing Wexford today and not Kerry.
Former All Star Marty McGrath has had time to suffer and just about recover from an accident at work in the meantime and although he's named on the bench here, we're certain to see him at some stage. Liam McBarron takes his place.
As for Wexford, the disappointment of last Sunday's second half against Laois could be crushing if not dealt with properly. They really were cowed into submission despite coming out after the break four points up. Yes, they were probably hard done by both with the disallowed goal and the sending off but it all seems a little too convenient to be pointing towards those kind of things. Had they put in a 10minute spell at the start of the second half like they did at the start of the first, they'd have been in a Leinster final. Nothing else makes a ripple in the pond.
Play like they did in that first half here and they'll torch Fermanagh. They're hard to trust fully just yet, however.
