'Cato overshadows Eclipse bright lights
Gary O'Rourke Sandown

RACING: ECLIPSE STAKES

DERBY hero Authorized was mugged by a brilliant Ryan Moore ride aboard Notnowcato in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's colt was sent off at odds of 4-7 to become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to land the Eclipse/Derby double.

But Authorized's pilot Frankie Dettori had not counted on champion jockey Moore, who was the only one to come down the stands side of the course.

It was to prove a masterstroke as he stole a famous victory on the Michael Stoute-trained five-year-old.

The horses were separated by the width of the track and it was Notnowcato (7-1) who got the verdict by a length and a half from Authorized, George Washington (4-1) was a head away in third.

Champery, acting as pacemaker for Authorized, quickly built up a long lead.

But he was virtually ignored by the rest of the field, which was headed by Notnowcato, Archipenko and Yellowstone - with Authorized and George Washington held up.

Moore chose to track over to the near side while Authorized, with his tongue sticking out, made his bid towards the centre after Yellowstone and Kandidate went on.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's Derby winner had to battle to get there, however, but managed to get his nose in front - only to be foiled by Notnowcato.

Last year's Eclipse runnerup kept on strongly to give Stoute his fifth Eclipse and Moore his first.

The stewards called an inquiry but it did not affect the winner.

"We just felt a length off the stands side was quicker, " Moore told Channel 4 Sport.

"Ryan and I had a chat on Wednesday morning and thought they'd all be doing that (heading towards the stands side), but then it dried out.

"This fellow is so honest and gives you everything.

"He's a brave, honest horse and has not got the credit he deserves."

Stoute added: "I said I would walk the track before racing but I didn't get here in time.

"But Ryan's done his job and felt that would be the right manoeuvre.

"He's such an honest, tough horse that we didn't have to worry about the others not following him.

"I thought someone would follow us because they may have felt we were the danger.

Ryan is back among the winners after he was out through injury but that was a good bit of professionalism and he deserves a lot of credit."

Dettori said of Authorized: "The horse thinks he's won. They split into three and it's always difficult when everyone's trying to beat you.

"You can't follow everybody - I made my decision to stay with George Washington.

"Unfortunately I was on my own at the furlong marker and he had a pretty difficult task.

"Hopefully he'll redeem himself next time."

Aidan O'Brien, responsible for third-placed George Washington said: "He ran a blinder and the ground was messy at the start. The winner is the horse with the form and don't take anything away from him."
