Big guns move to recalibrate their firepower
Barry O'Donovan

SOCCER TRANSFER ROUND-UP

BIG movements in the striking departments for three of the Premiership's big four this week, all of which brings its own pressures and expectations for both team and individual.

Arsenal were first off the blocks . . . not a surprise given the need to appease the fans after the departure of Thierry Henry . . . with the capture of Eduardo da Silva from Dinamo Zagreb for somewhere between 8million and 16million depending on who you believe. It may not have been an Eto'o-type signing but the Croatian has a fine record of scoring goals with seven in 12 games for his country (including a header against England back in October) and 73 in 104 for his club.

Liverpool weren't long in laying down their own marker, finally putting an end to the Fernando Torres saga by snapping the Spaniard up from Atletico Madrid for a fee of around 20-25million, which was a club record fee for Liverpool for a player who notched 82 goals in 214 games in Spain and has a 14 goal in 40 strike rate for Spain. It may be looked upon as a missing link in Rafa Benitez's side, though the pressure will be on Torres to deliver straight off.

Ukranian Andriy Voronin also completed his move to Liverpool on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to add to the list of strikers at Anfield. Room will be made by the sale of Djibril Cisse to Marseille and most likely Craig Bellamy, with West Ham the probable buyers for close to 8million. Yossi Benayoun could go the other way and join Liverpool if the two teams can agree on a deal. Luis Garcia (4million) and Boudewijn Zenden (free) have also left Anfield, to Atletico and Marseille. Busy few days for Liverpool.

Man Utd didn't want to be left out of the fun so look set to take Carlos Tevez off West Ham's hands . . . what was thought to be a 20million transfer earlier may now become a two-year loan deal with an option to buy at the end of that time. Either way, Alex Ferguson will have a time trying to fit all his attacking options into one line-up next season, with Tevez quite similar in style to Wayne Rooney and the signing would surely mean the end of Alan Smith's and Giuseppe Rossi's time at Old Trafford. Chelsea haven't bought anyone yet this summer with a few free transfers their only incomings but look set to land Florent Malouda from Lyon for 15million or so and possibly Brazilian starlet Alexandre Pato from Internacional for close to that figure. Arjen Robben looks to be on his way off to Real Madrid sometime soon while central defender Alex should be arriving at Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks from PSV. Chelsea have also been told they'll need to pay 30million for right-back Dani Alves from Sevilla.

Outside the big four loop, Aston Villa officially signed Nigel Reo-Coker from West Ham for 8.5million and Spurs brought their summer outlay to over 30million with the signing of French U21 defender Younes Kaboul from Auxerre for 8million. Sunderland have made another defensive move, bidding 3million for Southampton's Chris Baird having failed to land Leighton Baines from Wigan for the left-back spot.

Fulham have captured Steven Davis from Aston Villa and looks like getting another Northern Ireland player in David Healy from Leeds. Sven Goran Eriksson has promised plenty of new faces at Man City over the coming weeks having taken over as manager at Eastlands. From an Irish perspective, former Sunderland midfielder Sean Thornton has signed for Leyton Orient of Division One, having been released by Doncaster at the end of last season while striker Leon Best has transferred from Southampton to Coventry City.
