BMW gets serious about 1-Series
Brian Byrne

BMW has released details of a long-awaited Coupe version of the brand's 1Series. The company says it hopes the new car will reinvent the niche created by the legendary BMW 2002.

The 1-Series Coupe will be available in four versions . . . the 128i, the 135i, the 123d and the 120d . . .

with 3.0-litre petrol engines and 2.0-litre diesels.

For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0100km/h is accomplished in 5.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 255km/h.

The passenger section, with the characteristic BMW 'Hofmeister kink', is moved rearward and offers a nimble look with the long hood. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler and on the 135i an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogenous lighting effect with the help of lightemitting diodes. All versions beyond the 128i have as standard adaptive xenon headlights complete with integrated cornering lights. A daytime headlight function is typical BMW style with two corona rings on each headlight unit.

BMW's iDrive is included with the optional navigation system. It enables the driver to control all secondary and comfort functions . . . such as communication, air conditioning, entertainment and navigation functions . . .easily and conveniently.

The car's dynamic stability control (DSC) also includes a dynamic traction control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control . . . but at a higher threshold before activation.

Six airbags come as standard within the new BMW 1-Series Coupe and there are also crashoptimized seats with specially padded headrests and backrests.

The driver's pedals move back automatically with a predetermined amount of deformation in the event of a frontal collision so the risk of driver foot injury is reduced.
