CAREER DOCTOR

Q I am returning to full time study and I have an interview coming up for a third level course. Do these interviews differ in any way from a job interview?

A You need to prepare for this interview as you would do for a job interview.

There are certain things that the panel will be looking for in successful candidates and you need to prove that you meet these criteria. There are some things you must bear in mind given that you are interviewing for a place on an academic course. The panel will be interested in why you wish to pursue a career in your chosen area of study, e. g. , medicine, marketing or accounting. You also need to consider why you are applying for this specific course over other courses in this academic field. Is there anything unique this course offers its students?

This is an opportunity to show off what you know about the institution itself and the particular course content. You should also demonstrate:

- Your ability to get through an academic course.

This will involve good time management, planning and organising skills.

- You are the kind of person who will fit in with the rest of the class . . . that you have the interpersonal skills to develop effective relationships with your fellow students.

The panel may want to know if you have considered the practical elements of returning to full time study, particularly the financial implications. You need to demonstrate that you have considered this carefully and are ready for all the changes you will experience as a result.

Best of luck with the interview and good luck with the study.
