Out damn spot!

Problem skin can appear at any age, which is particularly annoying if, like me, you grew up under the impression that spots and acne are the sole preserve of the teenage years, to be replaced by the age of 18 . . . or at the very latest 20 . . . by flawless skin. How wrong I was.

Thankfully, beauty gurus have woken up to the fact that spots can continue into the 20s, can make a hormonal appearance at any time after this and can even make an evil comeback around the time of menopause.

Blemishes can be caused by many factors including pollution, stress, lack of sleep, use of poor quality cosmetics, menstrual cycles . . . you name it, it gives you spots. And problem skin even ages differently, with first signs including dilated pores, uneven tone and a dull complexion. Dermatologists say they see more and more women coming to them with these problems.

So what to do?

According to Dr Tom Mammone, executive director of research and development with Clinique, there are specific ways to deal with problem skin and they are not at all as obvious as they may seem. Moisturisation, for instance, is key.

Daily regime "All skin types should cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise twice a day, every day, " he says. "Moisture is not simply about adding oil. It is about balancing and caring for the skin. People with oily or blemish-prone skin should choose a moisturiser that is right for their skin type, such as the Anti-Blemish Solutions 3-Step System."

Clinique's 3-Step Skincare System has long been renowned for its effective cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising routine. But now it has modified this to include a system especially for people with persistent spot-prone skin. It's not an instant fix, they say, but rather a longterm regime that will get to the root of the problem.

According to Mammone, people with both dry and oily skin can suffer from spotty skin and irritation is a key factor.

"Cleansing removes oil and surface impurities and exfoliating unclogs the pores . . . which goes a long way towards preventing the formation of blemishes, " he says. "It is then important to soothe and calm the skin with the appropriate moisturiser."

The Anti-Blemish Solutions 3-Step System includes a facial cleanser, clarifying lotion and moisturiser and costs 68.50 for a three-month supply.

(Until 6 July, all Clinique counters are giving free skincare consultations and a sample 3-Step system that matches your skin type. ) Alternate cycles At the end of last year, Vichy introduced their Normaderm Renovating System for problem skin, which has proved a hit with women of all ages. Their exfoliating cleansing gel ( 11.75), Astringent Toner ( 11.75) and Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care ( 14.95) minimise blocked pores, refine skin texture and prevent redness and shine.

Ever notice that once you've treated your skin you feel like you need to go back to regular products? This is because skin has a turn-over period of 30 to 60 days. Any products being used to treat spot-prone skin should be used for several cycles to ensure the maximum benefits are received. But then you should alternate cycles with your ordinary skincare products to keep your skin balanced.

With a bit of luck, your skin will soon be doing so well, you can revert to your normal products entirely. Hurray!
