The front bench is complete, and the backroom boys are not far behind
By Kevin Rafter

THE changing of the advisorial class in Leinster House politics continues apace in the aftermath of the general election. Having already snapped up Liam Reid, once of this parish and latterly of the Irish Times, the Green Party returned to the media world last week when appointing its chief spin doctor in government. John Downing, the wellregarded political editor of the Star newspaper, is moving sides to become the new assistant government Press Secretary. Like Reid in the environment department, Downing will be working for John Gormley who's expected to be confirmed as Green Party leader on Tuesday. Bertie Ahern is expected to make a decision on Fianna Fail's position of Government Press Secretary in the autumn.

With all the appointments on the government side, there was more surprise last week when Adrian Langan resigned as Pat Rabbitte's senior advisor. Langan, who replaced Fergus Finlay two years ago, says he has no plans yet. But he would be ideally placed to head up the forthcoming EU referendum as he did with the second poll on the Nice Treaty some years ago.
