PSNI and gardai waiting on legal advice before arresting arson suspects
Conor McMorrow

PSNI officers and the gardai are awaiting legal advice before arresting the four suspects of a horrific arson attack that left a couple burned to death in South Armagh last year.

Thomas O'Hare (33) and Lisa McClatchey (21) died from their injuries after they were set on fire and doused in petrol by a number of men who burst into their house at Tassagh near Keady last November.

Four brothers . . . Martin, Nigel, Stephen and Christopher Smith . . . from O'Hare's native Clady were admitted to Louth County Hospital in Dundalk with severe burns in the hours following the attack.

The brothers are understood to have received their burns while carrying out the attack on O'Hare's home, and they were all treated in the severe burns unit at St James's Hospital in Dublin after their initial treatment in Dundalk.

PSNI sources confirmed to the Sunday Tribune this weekend that the four men are living openly in the south and one of them attended the Dublin-Tyrone floodlit game in Croke Park in February.

It is understood that the PSNI and Gardai are trying to jump through a number of legal loopholes at the moment as they wait to arrest the arsonists.

One PSNI source said, "We want to be sure that we arrest them under the correct legislation and we are working closely with the gardai in getting legal advice on the arrests."

Two of the men are understood to be still suffering with serious burn injuries and regularly attend St James's Hospital for treatment.

To date none of the four suspects have been charged for the arson attack, but a number of other people have been questioned. A 24-year-old man was released on police bail last December and a 43-year-old appeared in court charged with withholding information in relation to the inquiry.
