Garda who ledWesties investigation to retire
Mick McCaffrey

THE garda who led the investigation into the infamous Westies criminal gang is to retire from the force this week.

Detective Inspector Brian Sherry is the detective in charge of the Blanchardstown, Cabra and Finglas areas of west Dublin.

He is one of the country's best known and most respected gardai and came to public prominence in February 2006 when he gave evidence in the libel trial of Alan "Fatpuss" Bradley and his brother Wayne.

He recently headed up the investigation into the murder of innocent apprentice plumber Anthony Campbell and crime boss Martin 'Marlo' Hyland. He also led the probes into the murders of criminal brothers Mark and Andrew 'Madser' Glennon in Blanchardstown.

Sherry joined the force in April 1971.
