And by beating Limerick McCarthy also overtook a Limerick man, Tom Ryan, as having the best-win loss record in the Munster championship since Fr Bertie stepped down as Cork coach in 1980 (see 'Six of the Best', below left).
Also near the top of the grid are Tom's old buddy, Babs, and Justin's selector from 1984, Canon Michael O'Brien, who led Cork to two Munster titles and a league in the early '90s.
McCarthy has quite a record . . . only one defeat in every five Munster championship games. His namesake, Gerald McCarthy, in contrast, has lost one in every two Munster championship games.
In all, when you include McCarthy's time with Clare and Cork in the '70s, he's won an amazing 20 games in the Munster championship, drawing two more and losing just seven, a win-loss record of 72.5 per cent.
