THE Kevin Prendergasttrained Haatef has been a luckless performer this season, but Declan McDonogh's mount is expected to enjoy a welcome change of fortune in this afternoon's listed Belgrave Stakes at Fairyhouse.
The colt showed considerable promise last term when finishing fourth in the Dewhurst Stakes, and should be able to build on that here Senor Benny and Confuchias can chase him home.
Jockey Kieren Fallon makes a welcome return to saddle at the venue, following last Saturday's French mishap, and should make his presence felt by completing a treble through the David Wachman-pair of Choosing and Maundy Money and the Ballydoyle representative, One Great Cat, in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C&G) Maiden. One Great Cat shaped well on his debut at the Curragh three weeks ago when third to Myboycharlie, and the winner has franked the form since then by running away with the Anglesey Stakes.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien will be hoping for a better performance from Trinity College in the Rackenstown Race than he showed at the Curragh last time but Fallon's mount may have to settle for a share of the minor placings behind the Dermot Weldtrained duo Fleeting Shadow and Laywaan. Riding arrangements would suggest Fleeting Shadow is the better-fancied of the pair, but his stable-companion is a progressive sort who handles testing going.
Racing also takes place at Tipperary where John Queally's Aintree Hurdle winner Al Eile, who ran well in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle three weeks ago, is expected to take all the beating in the Grade 3 Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle.
The Ballykisteen Hotel & Golf Resort Hurdle is a highly competitive contest in which the vote goes to the Ruby Walsh-ridden Irish Invader at the expense of Knight Legend. Walsh has a good chance of following up aboard Bricks And Porter in the O'Dwyer Tarmac Handicap Hurdle.
