Next generation BMW has the formula

TWENTY-ONE years ago BMW gave us the high performance M3 which at the time exceeded all expectations in power output . . . and eventually in sales too.

The first generation was a winner with dramatic looks and notched up 18,000 sales (from an expected figure of 5,000) and the power output had been constantly raised from 195 bhp to 238 bhp.

It was big news at the time and there have been three more generations of M3 with the second generation netting 72,000 sales as the power output jumped from 286 bhp to 321 bhp. By the time the third generation arrived the power output was in the 343 to 360 bhp bracket and sales were topping 90,000.

Next September the fourth generation M3 will hit the streets with new power and cutting edge technology derived from BMW's Formula One experience.

A new body features a 'power dome' bulge on the bonnet to give extra air to the new four-litre V8 engine with a 420 bhp output at 8300 rpm. It develops 400 Nm of torque at 3,900 rpm. The engine delivers optimum torque and thrust throughout the entire speed range. The result is a 0-100km sprint time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed electronically controlled to 250 km/h (155 mph).

The coupe is built to be pushed to the limit and the driver can use MDrive push-button technology which allows for a choice of engine power, suspension settings, gear ratios and DSC management. These intelligent features make driving, even up to the maximum limits, more of a joy than a frightening experience.

For such a powerful car the steering, clutch and other controls are remarkably light and easy to use. The well-designed cockpit adds to the feeling of power and fun.

The M3 gets a carbon fibre roof which reduces weight and lightweight components are used throughout the vehicle.

Even so, the fuel economy runs at over 12L/100km if driven tamely, but this has never been an issue with M3 drivers. Some however may have an issue with the C02 emission levels at 295g/km.

Those who want to get behind the wheel will be asked to part company with 103,000. BMW expect that there will be over 30 orders a year here for one of the most exciting coupes available with the strongest competition coming from the Audi RS4.

In the coming year expect to see a cabriolet version and possibly a saloon version as well.
