Colman Doyle was staff photographer with the Irish Press and a freelancer for Paris Match, photographing everybody from JFK to Margaret Thatcher to Princess Grace of Monaco and Sean Lemass in the course of his career. Ireland's first documentary-style photographer, he was equally feted for his portraits of sporting heroes and the ordinary people of Ireland.
Now an exhibition, Eyewitness: Ireland through the lens of Colman Doyle celebrates his 60-year-long career. Ninety-five photographs from his collection of almost 25,000 images have been selected, including portraits of Charles Haughey, Pope John Paul II and life on the Blasket Islands in the 1950s. The exhibition, which is free, is running at the National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
