AFTER a frustrating week on the market, Roy Keane "nally made a breakthrough on Friday by completing the signing of Paul McShane from West Bromwich Albion for �1.5m. A long-time admirer of both McShane's ability and character from their time together at Manchester United, the move for the Irish international provides quality reinforcement to Sunderland's back-line after the club missed out on both Wigan left-back Leighton Baines and Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon recently.
Martin Petrov's transfer to Manchester City from Atletico Madrid undoubtedly represented the biggest transfer of the week in England, the dynamic Bulgarian leftwinger moving for �4.7m. SvenGoran Eriksson's second signing of the summer, after Brazilian playmaker Geovanni, is likely to be followed by at least three more players. First on the list are Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini, Olympiakos's Mexican striker Nery Castillo and Serbian forward Nikola Zigic from Racing Santander.
Eriksson's level of activity is likely only to be matched by Alan Curbishley. He continued his spending spree this week with the signing of Freddie Ljungberg from Arsenal. Curbishley will now turn his attention to the other side of his mid"eld, as he hopes to bring in Kieron Dyer from Newcastle United.
David Moyes also bolstered his midfield when he signed Borussia Dortmund's South African schemer Steven Pienaar on a season-long loan. Elsewhere in the Premier League, Luke Youngmoved to Middlesbrough from Charlton for �2.5m with Ipswich goalkeeper Lewis Price signing for Derby County. Fulham's Heidar Helguson moved to Bolton for an undisclosed fee, joining Christian Wilhelmsson who comes to the Reebok on loan from Nantes, while their neighbours Blackburn completed moved for Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz from Bayern Munich.
On the continent Atletico Madrid brought in former Liverpool target Simao Sabrosa for ?20m from Benfica, while Christian Chivu joined Inter from Roma for ?16m.
Paul McShane wasn't the only Irishman on the move this week.
Cork City's Roy O'Donovan was sold to Fulham for a fee which could rise to ?800,000. Finally, free agents Paul Butler and Richie Ryanmoved to Chester City and Belgian side Antwerp respectively.
